Close to the elements "It's a very personal interpretation, but I found that the dark, pyramidal silhouette of Borobudur echoed that of Mount Bromo, a sacred Indonesian volcano that is still active and rises to over 2,300 metres. After crossing the black sand plains, we took our time climbing the 250 steps to the crater rim. The closer we got, the stronger the smell of sulphur became. But when we arrived the sight was astonishing: a crater with a jade-green lake at its centre, from which there came a dull noise and billowing smoke. I've never felt so close to the bowels of the earth," Christine recalls with emotion. Balinese serenity "The island of Bali has preserved its Hindu traditions, cultivating a gentle way of life highlighted by picture-postcard landscapes. It was the perfect opportunity for us to immerse ourselves in the lifestyle of a Balinese family. We purified ourselves with water from the sacred springs of a temple, before sharing in the preparation of the meal and the daily offerings for the dead and the deities. Marked by learning about the harvesting of rice, making coconut oil, braiding bamboo fibre and dances to the sound of the gamelan [traditional instrumental ensemble, editor’s note], we were completely immersed as the hours passed by. A leap through time and space that we're not about to forget." 69
