Greenland with PONANT Anatomy of a unicorn In the Arctic, the elusive narwhal stands out as an exceptional cetacean. In the male, the upper left canine extends into a twisted tusk that can measure three metres. This 'horn' has 10 million nerves endings and its sensory properties are unique in the world. The colour of the animal varies according to its age: blue-grey at birth, it becomes black as an adult, before becoming covered in white spots, until it is immaculate white. SEASONAL CURIOSITIESThe tractors of Hrísey Newfoundland: half Viking, half Basque On the northern tip of the island, L'Anse aux Meadows bears witness to the Viking presence in America around the year 1000. Told in the Scandinavian sagas, the existence of a world to the west was probably known to Europeans long before Christopher Columbus took his own ship there. In 1517, Basque sailors, inspired by the Nordic adventurers, settled here to hunt whales and fish for cod in the Labrador Sea. Once upon a time on Cape Cod... Majestic icebergs, iconic glaciers and fjords, exceptional wildlife, visits to traditional villages and encounters with the Inuit: embark on a unique exploration of Greenland. Nicknamed 'the pearl of Eyjafjörður', the small island of Hrisey lies around 40 kilometres from Akureyri, in the north of Iceland. While it is a sanctuary for rare birds such as the rock ptarmigan and the common eider, its originality lies in the colourful tractors that dot the area: most of the 200 inhabitants travel exclusively in these agricultural vehicles. The history of the ‘Cape Cod’ begins with the epic story of the Mayflower, which landed the first pilgrims at Provincetown, welcomed by the Nauset and Wampanoag native communities. Since then, the peninsula has inspired numerous writers, from Henry David Thoreau's book of the same name, to Mary Higgins Clark's thrillers and Jan Kerouac's Baby Driver.
